In order to become a government teacher, the candidate should clear the Central Teacher Eligibility test (CTET) or other states’ Teacher Eligibility Tests (TET).

When a candidate has successfully passed CTET/TET, they become eligible to apply for government teaching jobs.

A teacher teaches all other professions. A teacher commands huge respect because they make the topic easier to understand for the learner.

The teacher works in a variety of roles like primary teacher, Trained Graduate teacher and Post Graduate teacher.

The CTET 2025 official notification will be released on the official website https://ctet.nic.in. Therefore, candidates should keep checking the official website for details about CTET 2025.

Last year CTET was held around June–July so probably in 2025 too CTET may be conducted around the same time.

CTET Eligibility

Candidates must fulfil the CTET eligibility criteria to appear for the exam. The CTET eligibility 2025 in terms of education qualification and age limit is shared below:

CTET Eligibility 2025: Paper 1

Candidates need to fulfil any of the below given eligibility criteria for CTET Paper 1:

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and cleared or appearing in final year exam of Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years duration). OR.

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam securing a minimum of 45 per cent marks and cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years’ duration). OR.

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Bachelor of Elementary Education (4 years’ duration). OR.

Senior Secondary or its equivalent test with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Diploma in Education (2 years duration). OR.

Bachelor’s degree with a BEd.

CTET Eligibility 2025: Paper 2

Candidates need to fulfil any of the below given eligibility criteria for CTET Paper 2:

Graduation degree and has passed or is appearing in the final year examination of Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years duration). OR.

Graduation degree with 50 per cent marks and has cleared or appeared in the final year exam of BEd. OR.

Graduation degree with 40 per cent marks and has cleared or appearing in the final year exam of BEd, according to NCTE regulations. OR.

Senior Secondary or its equivalent test with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and has cleared or appearing in final year exam of 4 years duration Bachelor of Elementary Education. OR.

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam with 50 per cent marks and cleared or appearing in final year exam of B.A.B. Ed/B. Sc. B.Ed. OR

Graduation degree with 50 per cent marks and has cleared or appearing in BEd program of 1-year duration.

UPTET

The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) conducts the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) to shortlist candidates for government teaching jobs in Uttar Pradesh, similar to the CTET.

UPTET official notification is still not out yet and candidates should keep checking the official website for updates about UPTET 2025.

UPTET comprises 2 papers. UPTET paper 1 for candidates who wish to become teachers for classes 1-5 and UPTET Paper 2 for those who wish to teach from classes (6-8). For those candidates who plan to teach classes (1-8) they should attempt both paper 1 & paper 2.

Good Earning Potential

UPTET is a prestigious exam because those who qualify UPTET can apply for government teaching jobs in UP. Clearing UPTET is one of the best ways to become a Government teacher in UP.

Therefore Candidates should prepare well, because teachers earn good salaries and the government has recommended an 8th pay commission for government employees.

Similarly, other states also conduct teacher eligibility tests that qualify candidates to apply for government teaching jobs. Hence, clearing TET is mandatory for applying for government teaching posts.

How to become a Government Teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS Recruitment)

Those candidates aspiring for PRT & TGT jobs in Kendriya Vidyalaya/Central schools should be CTET qualified to become eligible to apply for the KVS recruitment exam. PGTs can compete for KVS recruitment without CTET qualification.

KVS conducts an all India computer based selection test for short-listing candidates for 15000 tentative vacancies of teachers.

The written test comprises 180 questions to be attempted in 180 minutes, comprising 180 marks in total.

Selection weightage: 70% weightage is given to marks achieved in the written test, followed by a demo test that has 15% weightage and a final interview that has further 15% weightage.

Based on the above selection weightage criteria, a merit list is prepared of shortlisted candidates.

CTET is compulsory for candidates applying for PRT & TGT posts in KV schools.

Qualifying Marks: Candidates must score at least 60% (90 out of 150) for the general category to be eligible for teaching positions in KVS.

For OBC, SC, ST, and PwD categories, the minimum score is 55% (82 out of 150). Currently, there are 1,256 functional KVs across India, including three international KVs in Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran.

How to become a Government Teacher in Navodaya Vidyalas

Navodaya Vidyalayas are schools run by the Central Government which shortlist meritorious students through a selection test.

Therefore, they recruit excellent teachers who can raise the level of education to nurture the next generation of leaders & innovators for the nation.

In order to become a Government teacher in Navodaya Vidyalayas, candidates must meet specific educational qualifications. These qualifications vary based on the teaching post. Here’s a breakdown:

· Principal:

A Master’s Degree from a recognized Institution / University with at least 50% marks in aggregate. B.Ed or equivalent teaching degree.

Experience:

Must have at least 7 years’ experience in which a minimum of 2 years’ experience is required as Vice Principal1.

OR PGT or Lecturer in Central/State or Autonomous organization with 8 years of regular service.

OR Having 15 years of experience as PGT and TGT where a minimum of 3 years’ experience is required as PGT.

PGTs (Post Graduate Teachers):

Two years Integrated Post Graduate Degree from a regional college of education of NCERT or other NCTE recognized university in their relevant field OR Master’s degree with at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized university in the concerned subject.

B.Ed degree for those who have not undergone 4 years integrated course.

Proficiency in English and Hindi is a must.

TGTs (Trained Graduate Teachers):

Four years integrated degree course of Regional College of Education of NCERT or other NCTE recognized university in their relevant field.

OR Bachelor’s Honors Degree with at least 50% in all the concerned subjects or Bachelor’s Degree with at least 50% in all 3-year degree course.

Passed the CTET Exam conducted by CBSE.

B.Ed. Degree.

Competent to teach in Hindi and English Languages.

Miscellaneous Teachers: A Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field.

PRT (Primary Teachers): A Bachelor’s degree with a teaching diploma or equivalent qualification.

CTET compulsory for Government TGT posts

For TGT positions, candidates should pass the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) conducted by CBSE.

Some posts, particularly TGT and PGT level posts, may require prior teaching experience in recognized schools. Candidates should also have a command of English and Hind.

Navodaya Vidyalaya’s conduct a CBT for short-listing candidates for the post of Principal, PGTs and TGTs. There is the negative marking of ¼ for wrong answers.

The CBT includes multiple sections, with varying marks and numbers of questions based on the specific teaching post.

Principal: Reasoning & Numerical Ability, Language Competency Test (General English and General Hindi), General Awareness, Residential system, and Administration & Finance.

PGT: Reasoning Ability, General Awareness, Knowledge of ICT, Teaching Aptitude, and Domain Knowledge. A Language Competency Test (General Hindi and English) is also there.

TGT: Reasoning Ability, General Awareness, Knowledge of ICT, Teaching Aptitude, and Domain Knowledge. It includes a Language Competency Test (General Hindi and English, and a Regional Language).

Therefore, candidates should know the exam syllabus, previous year questions and prepare accordingly.

How to become a Government Teacher in Army Public Schools

The Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) recruits teachers for the 136 functioning APS in the country.

AWES conducts an Online Screening Test (OST) to shortlist candidates for the various PRT, TGT, & PGT posts in Army schools.

Passing the OST is not mandatory for appearing for the interview and evaluation of teaching skills & computer proficiency. 

After being selected as a regular teacher, the candidate must pass the OST within two years, achieving at least a 50% score (100 marks). From 2023, the OST score card is valid for life.

Short-listing: The screening exam assists schools in Short-listing suitable teachers for selection.

Interview, Evaluation of Teaching Skills and Computer Proficiency: Successful candidates from the OST are invited to an interview, teaching skills evaluation, and computer proficiency test.

Document Verification: Candidates go through a document verification process.

Medical Examination: Authorities may conduct a medical examination to judge a candidate’s medical fitness.

Final Selection: The selection process includes a written test, interview, evaluation of teaching skills and computer proficiency, and document verification.

Educational Qualifications for APS:

PRT: Bachelor Degree with 50% marks and B.Ed / D.Ed qualified with 50% marks.

TGT: Bachelor Degree in a relevant subject with 50% marks and B.Ed qualified with 50% marks.

PGT: Master’s Degree in a relevant subject with 50% marks and B.Ed qualified with 50% marks.

CTET/TET is not required to take the Online Screening Test. However, passing the CTET/TET conducted by the state or central government is necessary for appointment as TGTs/PRTs.

Candidates who do not qualify in CTET/TET but meet other requirements may be considered for temporary positions until they achieve the desired qualifications.
