The per capita land availability in UP is one of the lowest owing to a higher density of population. One of the best ways to augment farmers’ income is to diversify into aquaculture because the demand for fish products is on the rise.
There are ponds in every village which people can use for breeding freshwater fishes having good export potential. China is the largest importer of Indian fish products, accounting for 20% of India’s fish exports.
People the world over consume fish products, but the stagnant production from seas is prompting to cultivate freshwater fishes. We grow freshwater fishes scientifically & feed them a nutritious diet resulting in a bumper yield.
Further with pollution levels reaching startling levels, most sea fishes contain plastic, rendering them unhealthy for consumption. Likewise, many countries release human waste into the oceans, making them unhealthy for consumption.
ICAR along with CIFA (Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture) Bhubaneswar has devised an ambitious plan for making India the leading producer of fresh-water fishes.
There is a shortage of skilled manpower who can train in freshwater aquaculture because people are unaware of its commercial viability.
Aquaculture provides tremendous job opportunities for fisheries graduates because they can meet the massive demand through inland cultivation only. They can grow freshwater fishes in small lands by converting them into ponds, cages, & pens which most farmers can afford.
Besides the GOI ambitious Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) intends to double farmer’s income through entrepreneurship in aquaculture, improve the fish production, consumption & exports.
Water rich states like UP, Bihar, WB, & Assam have huge aquaculture potential because they receive enough rainfall which they can divert for fish production.
The dietary habits of these states favor fish production because the nutritional benefits of fish consumption are plenty.
A fisheries graduate studies the techniques of breeding different varieties of fishes, their management, diseases & processing because it’s a nutritious food.
This course focuses on fisheries processing, some of them are curing, freezing, canning, by-products, value addition, and waste utilization, quality assurance and certification, fisheries biochemistry, and fisheries microbiology.
As mentioned above, the demand for fish products is spiking the need for trained graduates capable of managing fish farms because seafood has tremendous export potential.

B.Sc (Industrial Fish & Fisheries) is a three-year course which one pursues after passing class 12th in the Science stream (PCB/M). Most universities & colleges conduct their entrance exams, while many admit based on the marks received in the qualifying exam.
