Share

The Bachelor of Law or LLB from IGNOU is non-existent because IGNOU doesn’t run any such course as Bachelor of Law (LLB). Hence, students should explore other institutions that offer the LLB course.

Further the Bar Council of India (BCI) stipulates that institutions run regular law courses because the legal profession requires good presentation & public speaking skills.

LLB from IGNOU sounds appealing because IGNOU is the largest Open University in India offering a variety of courses to choose form. The LLB course is practice oriented that prepares students to practice in a court of law.

India has the dubious distinction of having the highest case pendency in the world. Because of the tardy legal process maximum number of under trials are languishing in Indian prisons.

The high number of pending cases is a significant factor contributing to the prolonged detention of under-trials in Indian prisons. As of the end of 2021, the Indian courts had a staggering backlog of over 14.4 million cases, resulting in an overall pendency rate of 91.2% for the year.

This situation presents enormous opportunities for legal graduates to pursue a career in law and aid deserving individuals..

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has presented statistics showing that over 75% of prisoners in India are undertrials.

Out of 554,034 prisoners in 2021, 427,165, equivalent to 77 percent, were individuals awaiting trial. This reflects a 14.9 percent growth when compared to the preceding year, which recorded 371,848 undertrials.

Looking at it by facilities, district jails reported the most undertrial prisoners, making up 51.4 percent of the total count. Central prisons follow this (holding 36.2 percent), and sub-jails (containing 10.4 percent).

With the ever increasing case backlog we need young professionals to expedite cases and provide speedy justice to the victims. In a nation with a population of 135 million, the available judiciary only comprises around 25,000 judges. A significant number of positions, nearly 400, are vacant in their high courts. Furthermore, approximately 35% of the posts in the lower judiciary remain unoccupied.

These figures can be improved through speedy appointment of judges & magistrates so that they dispose cases faster providing much relief to the litigants.

Career Prospects

There is tremendous scope after doing a law degree because with the high backlog of cases people want speedy justice for their issues.  Because of economic liberalization more companies are hiring legal experts to protect their businesses from legal tangles.

In fact Legal Process Outsourcing has provided enough employment avenues because Indian lawyers provide litigation support to their overseas clients. Fast track & POSCO courts are being set up in every state to expedite justice & punish the perpetrators.

These require legal graduates to enter the Indian Judicial services and fill the posts in the lower & higher courts. The rising cases in Civil, criminal courts, financial & cyber frauds offer enormous opportunities for legal professionals because they are victimising ordinary citizens.

As humanity progresses in the digital age cyber criminals are using innovative tactics of impersonating & phishing to siphon off money from public accounts. All these cases require trained legal experts to provide legal aid to the victims to recover their hard earned money.

The various job roles available to a Bachelor of Law graduate are:

Litigation Attorney

After completing LLB, candidates can practice as advocates in different courts. They should clear the BCI exam and get themselves registered with the state bar council to practice as a Lawyer. The earning potential is immense because the increasing number of cases is a proof of this.

Corporate Counsellor

With the increasing number firms doing business in India the need for corporate lawyers has skyrocketed. Companies hire them to get advice about legal matters that could affect their business.

Cyber Lawyer

As discussed earlier cybercrimes are on the rise owing to greater internet penetration in the country. Law enforcement agencies, Government departments & corporates hire them to safeguard against cybercrimes. They provide legal aid in cases of financial fraud, impersonation & other cybercrimes so that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Government service

One can join the government as a Magistrate who is the first point of contact for people pleading before the court of law. To become a magistrate one should clear the State judiciary exam which is conducted by the state Public service commission. It consists of 3 stages – Preliminary, mains & interview.

Academician & Researcher

Those excelling in academics can pursue LLM and teach in law colleges as Professors. The salary is good & the job satisfying as they propagate the legal education in the country.

Legal Writer/Author

With so many news channels discussing Government legislations the need for legal experts explaining complex legal jargons is vital. They provide legal advice to general public & help the layman understand the implications of the new law for them.

They write for various legal journals and newspapers & provide valuable insights about new laws the Government enacts form time to time.
